Circular Quay, Sydney

The upgrade of Circular Quay was first raised as a Bicentennial project when the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects held an 'Ideas Competition' in 1983. At the time the Quay presented a rather run-down image with a narrow waterfront footway, poor landscaping, extensive roads and isolated maritime activities. Placed second, of the twenty invited groups, the majority of our initial ideas were ultimately translated into this exemplary urban waterfront project.

The upgrading of Sydney's historic waterfront, Circular Quay, transformed a once shabby transport interchange, wharves and government workshops into a vital focus for tourists. Carried out over a two year period leading up to the Bicentennial of Australia celebrations, the project is recognised by major architectural, urban and landscape design awards. The new waterfront includes a continuous promenade, a park to commemorate the First Fleet, a city square, waterfront amphitheatre, floating pontoons as well as numerous restaurants, kiosks and specialized sales outlets.

Our work involved an urban design masterplan for the entire Circular Quay precinct from the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House and detailed design and documentation of Circular Quay West, First Fleet Park, Hickson Road, Campbells Cove, Dawes Point Park and the waterfront promenade.
