| B10 Babworth Estate Gatehouse, Darling Point |
Located at the grand entrance to Babworth Estate, Darling Point, Sydney, The Gatehouse exploits the design opportunities afforded by the fusion of old and new. The restored 1912 Babworth House garage is of State Heritage Significance. Its mass and solidity is contrasted with the lightness and elegance of the new glass and steel Pavilion which reflects the gabled form of the original garage, connected by a glazed and louvred link interpreting a former glass house.
The open-plan contemporary spaces open on to a central courtyard, with large sliding doors creating a single large space for entertaining. Overlooked by a glazed link is a 2-storey void with a carefully detailed steel and timber stair connecting old and new. Experimental interiors have resulted from this exciting fusion of old and new, with double glazed walls with venetian blinds and external louvres to provide a sleek and light-filled solution for bathrooms which have freestanding baths, custom vanities and cable-suspended mirrors to create light and weightless spaces.
